pH larutan garam tersebut adalah 5,3. NH₄Cl adalah garam yang terhidrolisis sebagian dan bersifat asam. pH larutan garam tersebut ditentukan dengan rumus hidrolisis garam asam.

Pembahasan

Pada soal di atas diketahui beberapa data yaitu

M NH₄Cl = 0,2 M = 2 x 10⁻¹

Kb = 8 x 10⁻⁵

Adapun yang ditanyakan pada soal tersebut adalah pH dari garam yang terhidrolisis tersebut.

Langkah awal yang harus kalian lakukan untuk menentukan pH dari larutan garam tersebut adalah menentukan sifat dari garam termasuk garam asam atau garam basa. Sifat garam dapat ditentuukan dari hasil hidrolisisya. Berikut penentuan sifat garamnya:  

NH₄Cl → NH₄⁺ + Cl⁻

NH₄⁺ berasal dari basa lemah (dapat terhidrolisis)

Cl⁻ berasal dari asam kuat (tidak dapat terhidrolisis)

Reaksi hidrolisisnya adalah  

NH₄⁺ + H₂O ⇄ NH₄OH + H⁺

Pada reaksi tersebut dihasilkan ion H⁺ sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa garam tersebut bersifat asam. Garam tersebut memiliki valensi 1 yang dapat dilihat dari jumlah komponen sisa dari basa lemah (NH₄⁺). Selanjutnya pH garam dapat ditentukan dengan rumus:

[H⁺] = √((Kw/Kb) x M x val)

       = √((10⁻¹⁴/ 8 x 10⁻⁵) x 2 x 10⁻¹ x 1)

       = √(10⁻¹⁰ x 0,25)

          = √(25 x 10⁻¹²)

          = 5 x 10⁻⁶

pH = – log [H⁺]

    = – log 5 x 10⁻⁶

    = 6 – log 5

    = 6 – 0,7

    = 5,3

Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa pH larutan garam tersebut adalah 5,3.
